The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
Want to do something exciting for your expedition?
Hill Climb Activities experienced instructors can help your group train for, plan and execute a wide range of expeditions. Empowering students to undertake something different from the standard 2 day hike makes them stand out from the average DofE participant. We have the resources to facilitate sea kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking and mountaineering expeditions in both the UK and overseas. Give us a call to see what’s possible.
Hill Climb Activities can also facilitate all aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
Why do it?
Over the last few years the prominence of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award has grown to a level which many believe to be the equivalent of an academic qualification. Undertaking the award will give your student’s skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities. They will be getting academically recognised for doing things they want to do (and may even be doing already), plus they’ll make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last a lifetime. And above all, it's a great laugh!
The Bronze Award
A Bronze DofE programme has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. Students need be at least 14 years old to start a Bronze programme and must do a minimum of 3 months activity for each of the Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections, and plan, train for and do a 2 day (1 night) Expedition. Students also have to spend an extra three months on one of the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections. It’s their choice which one and, though they can change their mind later, they should decide which section they want to do for longer at the beginning. Knowing how long they’re going to do it for will help them to set their aims for the sections.
The Silver Award
The next step up from Bronze... your students need to be at least 15 to start doing the Silver DofE programme. A Silver DofE programme has 4 sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. They need to do at least 6 months Volunteering and a minimum of 6 months on either Physical or Skills and 3 months on the other. It’s up to them which one they do for longer.
The Expedition section involves planning, training for and doing a 3 day (2 night) expedition.
The Gold Award
Once your students hit 16 they can do the Gold DofE programme. They’ll spend 12 months on the Volunteering section. For Physical and Skills they must spend 12 months on one and six months on the other - they decide which way round you do it. The big difference at Gold, is they will also do a Residential section - staying away from home for five days and four nights doing a shared activity with people you don't know. It's great fun and a real chance to do something different!
